Want to make FREE US phone calls with your home phone with no monthly fee?
I found out about a cool service and tested it, and now I want to tell you about it. Let me first give you some background on it and tell you a short story about how I found out about it.
I was recently at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, and I was hanging out at the Ooma booth. Ooma is a service that allows you to hook up your current home phone to a box that is connected to the Internet, and then you get to make free phone calls to anyone in the US, and very low-cost international calls.
That’s not uncommon, right? I mean Vonage does the same thing. Well, not exactly. The kicker with this service is that there is no monthly fee! That’s right. All you have to do is buy the box and you’re good to go.
Here’s what the box looks like:
No more phone bills after that, because after you sign up and see how good it is, you’ll want to cancel your current land line! Just so you know, you can keep your land line number. Just request to have it ported to Ooma.
And request to have it ported BEFORE you cancel the line. Otherwise you will lose the number. Once it is ported, your land line should automatically be cancelled, as there is no longer a number associated with it. But I would still call the phone company to confirm that your land line account has been canceled after the number ports to Ooma, just to be sure.
And make sure you don’t cancel your DSL when you cancel your land line, if you have DSL. It is possible to have DSL without a phone line, at least it is through AT&T. So call your ISP to set that up before you request that your number be ported.
But I’ll tell you more about that later. I want to finish my story. As I was saying, I was hanging out at the Ooma booth at the Consumer Electronic Show a couple of months ago, and my father came to the show later than I did that day. When he came, I briefly told him about this service. He was very interested. So I showed him how it worked. He was pretty impressed and wanted to know more.
It just so happened that they were giving away a free Ooma box (worth $249) every hour. So, my father wanted to enter. They were on lunch and weren’t around, so we came back when they said they would start the raffles again. Still nothing. So we went away, but my father kept on saying that we had to go back. So we did.
Eventually, they came out. So when they came around with the empty fish bowl for the raffle entries, I threw in my business card. My father was hesitating, but I said, “Get in there! Put your card in!” So he did.
When they drew a card, they yelled, “Juicy Brown!” I immediately said, “Jay Brown!” And the presenter said, “Yes, Jay Brown!” (I had actually written his name on my business card, so since my handwriting is not my forte, he couldn’t really read it). My father was so excited he couldn’t get over it!
I asked him how he did it. He said that he just felt that he wanted it and needed it, and he felt as though he was going to win. Well…he did! The guy can manifest, let me tell you!
Anyway, after he got home, I helped him set it up over the phone with Ooma’s tech support. It was pretty easy to set up, but my father likes to have me on the phone for reassurance so I can translate the tech lingo if he needs me to.
We have since been using it when he calls me and it sounds great! I was not expecting much, but it really does have quality calls. And they are supposed to come out with a new service that will make the call quality even better.
So, after using it with my father, I can definitely say that I recommend it. It’s a great service and can save you roughly $50/mo (or whatever your current phone bill is), which turns out to be $600 per year! That’s a nice chunk of change, and it adds up over the years.
Just in case you are wondering what comes with it, here are the services that it provides with the free service:
– Free calling within U.S. and low-cost international calls with no monthly bills
– Caller-ID, call-waiting and 911
– Outstanding voice quality and secure, encrypted phone calls
– Easy set-up with any telephone; no PC required
– Option to keep your current number and landline service
– 30-day money-back guarantee and extendable 1-year warranty
– Free trial of Ooma Premier — a suite of enhanced features
And if you want even more features, they offer a Premier Plan, which is $10/month.
Here is what you get with Ooma’s Premier Service:
– Advanced Voicemail Options for voicemail forwarding and added privacy
– Instant Second Line for large households with busy phone lines
– Personal Numbers for all family members so you’ll always know who a call is for
– Call Blocking and Community Blacklist to help rid yourself of persistent telemarketers
– Multi-ring, which lets you forward your calls to your cell phone or any other phone you choose
– Three-way Conference Calls so that you can easily add a third person to your calls
– And much more…
The Instant Second Line is very cool. The way it works is if someone is on the phone and someone calls, then you can pick up another phone in the house and you’ll be able to talk to that new caller while the other person is still talking on the other phone. Not only that…if someone in your house is on the phone and you want to make another call, you can. Just pick up another phone, and it will give you an “Instant Second Line.” Pretty cool, huh? But you have to have all of the phones in the house on Ooma for that to happen.
The way to have all of the phones in your house on Ooma is to first cancel your land line, as it will need to use the phone line in your house. Next, take a phone cord from the wall and plug it into the Ooma Telo box. If you have a phone near the box that you want to hook up, you can either plug it into a wall phone jack (if one is available) or into the back of the Ooma Telo box. For all of your other phones, just plug them into any wall jack in the house (assuming they are all on the same line), and all of them will be on Ooma! Very cool. No adapters or anything. Just plug it straight into the wall after you complete the above steps.
With the Premier Service, you can also have a true second line, with a second phone number and everything.
There are more features, but you might as well go and and check it out!
