How to Export Your AOL Address Book into Gmail, Outlook, etc.
Have you been with AOL forever and you finally are making the switch to another Internet and email service? If so, you’re probably like everyone else who makes the switch from AOL in that you have been with them forever, and you don’t want to lose all of your contacts that you have accumulated over the years. Completely understandable. I would be the same way.
Well, here’s how to export your AOL address book into a format that pretty much any other service or email client can import.
- Go to http://mail.aol.com
- Log into your AOL account that has all of the contacts that you want to export
- Click on CONTACTS on the left
- Click on TOOLS>EXPORT above the list of email messages
- Select CSV file (comma separated value)
- Save to your computer (remember where you save it to)
- Open up the email service or email client that you want to import your address book into
- Import the CSV file that you just exported into the desired address book (check the instructions for that service or client on how to import it)
- Done!

this doesn’t work for a mac, there is no export under tools. Now what?
Chris, the fact that you have a Mac will not change what is on AOL’s webmail website, nor change what you are able to see. The only thing that would do that would be the lack of the flash plugin or a browser that is not compatible with AOL’s webmail website. This is not a Flash issue, as it is simply a popdown menu.
Which browser are you using? Have you tried a different browser? Were you clicking on the TOOLS popdown menu on AOL’s webmail website or somewhere else? I was even able to do it remotely by logging into a PC via my Mac via a remote access software program, so both OS platforms are able to access it.
Thanks for very helpful advice. Managed to successfully import all my aol contacts into gmail but my icloud account refused to import the csv file saying it had incorrect data on it – could the csv be too large to import? I would rather use my icloud account as my main one if I can! Thanks, Emma
I don’t know why AOL can’t just provide the info you did. Thanks very much for sharing this info.

I have AOL. These instructions didn’t work for me. I followed completely and received a translation error:
A file error has occurred int he Comma Separated Values (Windows) translator while initializing a translator to build a field map.
Outlook was unable to retrieve the data from the file (file name). Verify that you have the correct file (which I have), that you have permission to open it, (which I do), and that it is not open in another program (which it isn’t). Please help. Thank you!
Jamie, I have the same problem, were you able to correct it?
Used Excel to open the CVS file and save again in CVS format. It works.
Thank you! It worked!!!! Jamie
This worked and was able to see if I open the contacts folder, But finding that when I start to type a name, It does not auto populate. Is this normal. Also, It only gave me the option to import to This computer only which is probably correct, BUT it had a specific email file location, But had no option for all the other email accounts I have in Outlook
How do i move all of my AOL address book at one time … rather than having to do it line by line … that will take FOREVER … ?
Ooo Very Nice blog, very use full ,I have the same problem, were you able to correct it?
